UEFA make major Euro 2024 rule change that is bad news for Cole Palmer

UEFA's recent rule change to Euro 2024 could have a major effect on Cole Palmer's England hopes.

The Chelsea winger came back to haunt his former team, Manchester City at on Sunday, scoring the decisive penalty to make it 4-4 against Pep Guardiola's side.

The 21-year-old was rewarded with a call-up to Gareth Southgate's Three Lions squad along with former City teammate Rico Lewis following injuries to James Maddison and Callum Wilson.

Palmer has been on fire since making the £40 million switch from Manchester to London on transfer Deadline Day, with Jamie Carragher believing the youngster could play a big part for his country at Euro 2024.

"He's part of the group of players I feel who are making a late surge for the tournament next summer for England," the Liverpool legend said on Sky Sports.

"The way he's playing right now, you feel there's a great chance he could end up in that Euros squad."

However, UEFA's decision to cut down teams' squad size from 26 to 23 players could go against the likes of Palmer, who is currently on the fringes of the senior team.

Countries were previously only allowed to bring 23 players to the tournament prior to Euro 2020, when it was decided that teams would be allowed an extra three spots due to to the disruptive effect of Covid-19.

But the usual 23-man squad will return for next summer's competition.

There is already huge competition for places within the squad, with the likes of Fikayo Tomori, Lewis Dunk, Levi Colwill, Ollie Watkins, Jarrod Bowen and Eddie Nketiah all fightig for a place in Southgate's team.

England host Malta on Friday, who are yet to pick up a point during qualification, before travelling to North Macedonia with the hope of securing top spot in Group C.
