Scottish singer has 2007 song bizarrely top of the charts in Saudi Arabia thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo has helped a 2007 song becoming the number one song in Saudi Arabia.

As one of the most marketable and well-known people in the world, the 38-year-old's influence on fans cannot be overstated.

His move to Saudi in December 2022, as part of a £173-million a year deal with Al Nassr, kickstarted a revolution which has seen a slew of world-class players make the switch to the Middle East.

And bizarrely, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner is partially responsible for the resurgence of the hit track 'This Is the Life' by Amy MacDonald.

The song was released by the Scottish singer in December 2007 and ended up climbing to number one in six different countries.

Her album, which carries the same name, went triple platinum.

It's MacDonald's biggest song by far but it has now experiencing a resurgence thanks to TikTok, where highlights of Ronaldo and Al Ettifaq's Jordan Henderson in the Saudi Pro League feature the tune.

'This is the Life' ended up reaching number one in the charts for Saudi on streaming service Spotify, leaving the 36-year-old stunned.

"What is nuts is that song is currently number one in Saudi Arabia," she said on the Restless Natives podcast, hosted by Martin Compston and Gordon Smart.

"I had started noticing I was getting a lot of comments in Arabic on social media.

"I was like 'It looks lovely but I've got no idea what it says' and there was just more and more of it.

"Somebody looked into it and there seems to be a lot of videos on social media using 'This Is the Life' that are like Ronaldo playing football in Saudi Arabia.

"I said to one of my mates about it and they sent me a photoshop of Jordan Henderson wearing an Amy Macdonald t-shirt."

At the time of writing, the song has been played 380, 570, 496 times on Spotify. MacDonald is a huge Rangers fan and married former player Richard Foster in Las Vegas in 2008.
